Ely City Golf Club hits the mark with national golf award
Ely City Golf Club hits the mark with national golf award. Ely City Golf Club has become the first club in Cambridgeshire to achieve the new-style national GolfMark award in recognition of its work to improve the golf club.
GolfMark, which was re-launched to reflect the changing landscape of the industry, is England Golf’s official seal of approval for those successfully working to develop their business in such ways as:
Attracting new members and encouraging existing members to play more golf.
Using practical business planning to develop and futureproof the golf club.
Offering appropriate coaching opportunities for both juniors and adults.
Ensuring all necessary safeguarding policies are in place and communicated.
Perched on the side of the Isle of Ely, the club is host to a beautiful 18-hole parkland golf course with views of the Cathedral and extensive practice facilities including a putting green and chipping/bunker area. The friendly and welcoming atmosphere in the clubhouse makes it the perfect venue to relax after your round, celebrate a special occasion or for a business meeting.
One exciting recent development is the link that the club have formed with the Golf Foundation (www.golf-foundation.org) who provide funding and support to help young people enjoy the playing and personal benefits of golf. This has led to the club becoming an official Golf Roots Centre for junior development and will now offer coaching through their PGA Professionals to the pupils of Witchford Village College.
Maintaining progress and growth in other areas has also been targeted for 2017, including the continuation of the successful academy that welcomes and supports new ladies to try golf, promoting their business membership at the club and encouraging shorter formats of the game, such as 9-hole play, to accommodate those who may not always have the time for the full 18.
Full members and more experienced golfers are also well looked after, with many varied competitions and social events on offer throughout the year and access to high level coaching overseen by Head Professional Andrew George. Andrew who has been at the golf club for almost 25 years said:
“It’s a great achievement for the golf club to gain the new GolfMark award. Here at the Professional Shop we are very proud of how our hard work has contributed to this national award. Along with my two fully qualified PGA Assistant Professionals, Paul Geen & Jamie LeBrun, we are keen to promote golf here at Ely and help grow the game through our comprehensive coaching programs. Now we have been recognised for our forward-thinking approach we are excited to see what the future holds and look forward to helping new and existing golfers”
Mark Smith, Golf Coordinator for Ely City Golf Club, who headed the GolfMark process for the club added:
“Being the first club in Cambridgeshire to receive the new accreditation is great news to all those at Ely City Golf Club and testament to the hard work of the staff, committee and members who have made the club such a vibrant place on and off the course. The GolfMark has helped us put procedures in place alongside our own Development Strategy and aligns with our vision for continual improvement and make golf accessible to all.”
The award was presented to Golf Club by Marc Smith, County Golf Development Officer for Cambridgeshire, who commented:
“I’m delighted that Ely City Golf Club has become the first club in Cambridgeshire to gain the nationally recognised GolfMark award following the relaunch. There is a great team of people at the club all working together and credit to Mark Smith, the Golf Coordinator, for driving this achievement. The club now has a clear vision of where it wants to be and a sound business plan in place outlining how it intends to get there. Increasing engagement with the membership and local community has helped the club to understand its offering and by going through this process is in a really strong position for the future”
The GolfMark award was developed by England Golf and also integrates Sport England’s Clubmark award - a national standard for quality sports clubs recognised across the country. It brings a number of benefits to clubs including raising awareness, access to funding, business and marketing support and training opportunities for staff and volunteers. Almost 40% of clubs have increased membership numbers since receiving the award www.golfmark.org.
