History on International Women's Day

Fri 08 Mar 2019

Ely City Golf Club is proud to announce the historic appointment of its first Lady Chair of the Management Committee, with the election of Christine Ratcliffe to the post, following her election to the Committee at the AGM in February.

In addition, the members of the club also elected Eve Mair to the Management Committee at the AGM and Eve has taken up the role as Chair of the Green Committee.

Commenting on her election to the post, Christine said “I’m thrilled to be elected into the role and looking forward to serving the club to the best of my abilities over the term of office. I’ve been playing golf for over 37years (33 at Ely) and it’s kept me fit and active and the social aspect of the game gives you a chance to meet all sorts of people and play different courses.

I was Ladies’ Captain at Ely in 1998 and Secretary of the Cambridgeshire and Huntingdon LGA from 2005-9. For the past year I’ve been Junior Organiser at Ely and have really enjoyed seeing the juniors improving. One of my aims this year is to get more people into golf – of all ages and genders!

It’s been a huge part of my life for many years and I am delighted to be making history at Ely City Golf Club.”

Commenting on developments, Club President Mike Hoare said “At a time when there is considerable focus, led by the R&A, on Women in Golf, Ely City Golf Club have continued a trend started many years ago of fully involving Ladies in all aspects of running the Club, including a past Lady President. With the election of Christine and Eve to the Management Committee ladies now make up one third of the Committee.

These appointments have been made purely on merit and not on grounds of gender. To continue the trend of ladies in positions of responsibility, the Junior Captain this year is Ella Mason.

We are delighted to be creating gender balance within the club, which I believe will be hugely beneficial to the operational aspects whilst raising our profile locally and nationally.”
