Autumn News from the Men's Captain

Mon 25 Sep 2017

As usual in the golfing calendar, August and September have been busy months.

22nd August was the date of the Ely Pro Am which as always was well organised by our professional Andrew. There was good support for the event both from our own club members and visiting teams and the course was in excellent condition.

This was followed by the Ryder Cup, organised as usual by Bob Harker. There seems to be less enthusiasm for this event in Ely Minnesota, but all those who 'represented' Ely enjoyed the golf and the food and drink afterwards. There was a great atmosphere in the clubhouse which was undiminished by the fact that the weather in Minnesota meant that their teams were unable to play until later in the week. When the results did come through Ely had won 2-1, thanks to excellent scores by the Ladies Team and the 'Men's (2) Team.' This may be the last time this event is run. If so thanks are due to Bob Harker who has worked tirelessly over the last 10+ years to make the event the success that it has been. I know how much work he has put in.

Two weeks later, we had the annual Captain/Vice Captain match. Although the field for this year was smaller than usual - only 44 players - those who played had a good day, again including an excellent meal afterwards. Congratulations to the Vice Captain's team for their narrow victory ably led by Greg Davidson despite him having to go paddling in the pond at the back of the 4th hole. Congratulations also to Stan Nixon who was nominated by Greg as his vice captain. A very popular choice.

Last week, we had the Captains' charity day. Like all the main golfing events this year, we were blessed with lovely weather with 18 teams taking part in a shotgun start. Again, we had a  successful day with last year's winning team captained by Dougie Davidson winning for the second year running with an excellent score. Thank you to all those who played and supported this year's charity. Hopefully, Matthew will soon be able to let us know how much was raised.

Amidst all these events, the club qualified for the Goddard Cup final. This is the main County scratch event. Having had a really good win against Newmarket in the semi final, Ely faced a very strong team from Gog Magog in the final at Saffron Walden.

Unfortunately the Gogs were too strong, but it was still a great achievement to reach the final for the third time in four years. Thank you to Dale Isaacson for captaining the team and arranging the matches in the earlier rounds and to Luke Ryan for acting as captain for the final when Dale was unable to play owing to injury.

Congratulations are also due to the Men's team representing the club in the Annodata competition who have reached the Regional final and to the Men's team who have reached the final of the Burridge Cup - another County event. The final is being  in played at Gog Magog on the 1st October. All supporters welcome. Thank you to Mark Smith and Alan Kirby for respectively captaining and selecting these teams.

Finally, I have received a lovely letter from David Howell accepting Honorary Membership of the club and saying how much he had enjoyed his visit. Hopefully he will visit us again. Unfortunately he is still unable to play any golf on the European tour owing to a bad back. He currently has a 3 year medical exemption, and I know that all our members will hope that he is soon back playing and winning.
