May News from your Mens' Captain

Sun 08 May 2016

The golfing season is now in full swing with a busy course and warmer weather. One of my aims for the year was to encourage members to get involved with all parts of the club and certainly the entries for most competitions are up on last year. The regular weekly e-mails from Golf Co-ordinator Mark Smith and Office Administrator Gracie Beynon are helping to keep members updated on all events at the Club.

With a busy course comes issues with pace of play and I would encourage all players firstly to check tee closures before making arrangements and then to keep up with the group in front and to be aware of other groups on the course. Good etiquette can help to prevent problems.

The course is in excellent condition, although playing tough, and continues to get praise from our many visitors and especially from CAGU when we hosted the County Foursomes, congratulations to Andy Baker and his team.

I announced at the beginning of the year that I would be awarding ‘Golfer of the Month’ and I can announce that the first winner for April is Owen Buckley (pictured below). Owen won the St Georges competition and played well in 4 qualifying competitions during the month reducing his handicap from 18 to 16.

The Scratch League, captained by Luke Ryan, is now under-way, the first match against Elton Furze resulting in Ely winning all 3 matches. They are looking forward to a successful year.

There have been 2 Mens Matches, home against Girton where we won all 3 matches and away to Peterborough Milton where we had a very enjoyable day but were defeated 4-2. Peterborough Milton is a reciprocal course and if you have not played it I would encourage to as it is a good test of golf and in great condition. If you wish to be involved in future matches add you details to the sheet in the locker room.
