Spring News from your Men's Captain

Tue 18 Apr 2017

The first main golfing event of the year was the sausage supper on the 31st March/2nd April. This was one week later than usual to allow for Mothering Sunday the previous weekend. Numbers were down slightly on last year and some of the 'regulars' were unable to attend but Simon (Rosie) Gribble did a great job as master of ceremonies and he and Mike Hoare were also responsible for the tote afterwards. Our club president did the 'Board' and my thanks to all of them for helping to make the evening a success.

72 players (or rather 71, because one member unfortunately did not turn up) played in the Texas Scramble on the Sunday which was won by Mick Munnelly, Matthew Bowman, Matt Oates and Simon Cooper with the brilliant score of 58.1. Congratulations to them.

The England v Rest of the World match did not take place on the 8th April due to lack of interest. This was cancelled and my Vice Captain may need to consider a different format for next year. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

The Captains' Easter Stableford competitions have been well supported. This was no doubt in part due to the good weather for the time of year and the superb condition of the course, particularly the greens which are now starting to speed up. Thank you to all members who have supported this event which raises money for the Captains' charity.

On the social side, the Captains' drive in dinner was well attended and enjoyed by everyone. Most members entered into the spirit of the 60's theme and the band Rocking Revival were well received.

On Easter Saturday, we had a medieval banquet. Again this was well supported and 'Kester the Jester' ably assisted by an impromptu performance by Malvin Rogerson provided great entertainment. A big thank you to David Thresh who was primarily responsible for organising this event and to our President Bill Harrison and his wife Nicki who were 'Lord and Lady' for the night.

The golfing year is now beginning to start in earnest. I hope that members will support the various competitions over the forthcoming weekends. Don't forget the David Howell Stableford which is an 'extra' competition on the 7th May with nearest the pin and other prizes relating to David Howell's visit on the 13th May. I  also need your support for the Men's Invitation  day on 14th May.
