Summer News From Your Ladies' Captain

Tue 05 Sep 2017

My year since I became Ladies Captain in February has been busy and interesting. I had my first friendly match at the end of March at St Ives.  This match was rained off after 9 holes, since then none of the friendly matches have been affected by the weather and I have met some lovely ladies at these events and have enjoyed playing other courses and hosting the matches at Ely.

The club entered three county team competitions, the Grace Norman, the Jean Wilkinson and the Mary Cole Rose Bowl but were unsuccessful in all three.  We entered a team in the Annodata national competition but came up against a very strong team from Newmarket in the first round which Newmarket won.  My thanks go to Greta Barclay, Terry Robinson & Liz Smith who organised these competitions for me.

The Coronation Foursomes heat was won by myself & Maureen Hagen and we took part in the regional final in Nottingham but we did not progress any further.

The winners of the Ely heat of the Ping FBB were Anette Gautrey & Cheryl Ward and they played in the Plate Competition at Gainsborough but were not placed.

On 7th June we held a Ladies Open.  The day was fine but windy and 23 teams of 4 ladies took part in this with a Shotgun Start.  This event was successfully organised by Eve Mair & Jane Young and they are to be congratulated for their efforts.

My Captain’s Day on 14th June was held in glorious sunshine and I was joined by my son, daughter, grandchildren, sister and many ladies in celebrating this day.  The theme of the day was gardens & flowers and a prize for the best costume was won by Sue Didlick, Ruthie Ashton & Karen Jahnke who came as Bill & Ben the Flowerpot Men & Little Weed.

In April we hosted the County Division One meeting which was successfully organised by Jill Gamlin.

Championship Day was held on Sunday 13th August another fine and sunny day and the Championship was won by Ella Mason who at 14 became the youngest winner of this competition.
