Summer News From Your Men's Captain

Fri 21 Jul 2017

Since my last report in April, the golfing season is now in full swing. I acted as starter for the first monthly medal of the season at the end of April and as usual this was very well supported with over 130 members playing. Our monthly medals in May & June were also very popular, partly because those playing were keen to try and qualify for the Club Championships. Thank you all for supporting these events and the other club competitions over the last three months.

On the 17th June, I had my Captain's Day. Members have all received a separate email from me about this and looking back I cannot believe the fantastic support that I received. I hope all those who played and/or stayed for the hog roast afterwards enjoyed the day as much as I did.

The following week on the 20th June, it was my job to organise the past captain's Trophy and dinner. Although not all the past captains played golf, the dinner was attended by 21 of us, including my Vice Captain Greg who put forward the names of various members to be his Vice Captain. A lively discussion followed and hopefully this has helped Greg to reach a decision. His final choice will be revealed at the meal following the captain/vice-captain match on the 16th September.

During the same week on the 25th June, the Club Championship took place. This year I was lucky enough to qualify and we had a full field of 72 players who enjoyed good weather. Congratulations to Ashley Sizer who is the new Club Champion. Two great rounds by him of 73 & 75 gross off 6 handicap. I hope he doesn't mind me saying so, but he certainly wasn't one of the favourites to win. All the more creditable for that, particularly as he also won the prize for the best net score.  Also well done to all those involved in the organisation, particularly our Club Manager Matthew ably supported by Gracie. Thank you also to Andy for ensuring as always that the course was in excellent condition.

From my point of view, July has been slightly less busy. The club trophy competitions have continued to be well supported and the weather has so far been kind for most of the month.

Next week on the 29th July, we have Gala Day. Fortunately for me this is organised by the two Vice Captains Greg and Marion, and the Committee which they have set up to help them. All the proceeds of this will be used for the benefit of the club and the members. In fact this year, the money raised has already been pre-allocated and is being used by the club to pay for part of the cost of the new practice nets. Again, this event seems to be very well supported and the lists for the morning and afternoon golf events are almost full. I hope that everyone will have a good day and that as many as possible will stay or come back in the evening. As usual family and guests are very welcome.

The next few weeks see a number of Club friendly matches, details of which are on the Notice Board in the Mens' changing room. So far I have struggled to get teams for these matches which are always very sociable and enjoyable. Please add your name to the list(s) if you would like to play.

 Happy Golfing
